Cub Capers - January 15

Dear Parents/Guardians,                                                                                                              January 15, 2014
Welcome back! I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday and enjoyed the snow we had last week! As a reminder, if the busses are cancelled, so are Cubs.
Fundraising
Our Little Caesar’s Pizza Kit fundraiser is still on-going. Order forms need to be turned in by tonight (Wednesday) or tomorrow night, at the latest. Pizza Kits will be available for pick-up on Wednesday, January 29.  Thank you to all the Cubs who came out to help with the movies at the Norgan Theatre over break.  Our next movie day will be February 17.  More details will follow.
ScoutsTracker
Palmerston Cubs will be using a new program called ScoutsTracker to track badge work and other program requirements.  It is internet based and has capabilities for parents/guardians/cubs to access their own record and see what badges they have completed and what they need to do to complete badges that they are almost done.  It also allows badge to be marked as “ready to test” so that the leaders know when a Cub has completed a badge requirement.  Each Cub will have an individual sign-in (e-mail address) and password.  I am still in the process of entering past information in to the program, but you should (hopefully) get an e-mail from me/ScoutsTracker in the next couple of weeks inviting you to create your personalized log-in.
It has many other exciting features as well, such as being able to register for camps and outings online and more! The program is very user-friendly, however if there is enough interest I can do an orientation to the program. Let me know if you are interested.  If you’d like to read more about the program before you get access to your Cub’s file, check out: http://scoutstracker.ca/main/
Other Business
As you know, Akela had her baby just before Christmas.  Samuel will be attending meetings with Akela for the foreseeable future as he is too young to leave with someone else. Samuel is breastfed and if he is hungry at a meeting, he will be fed discretely at the meeting.  Akela will go to the kitchen and feed him there (once he is big enough and we are coordinated enough for him to feed discretely in a carrier, he may be fed in a carrier while Akela continues with the meeting – we aren’t there yet though). The other leaders will continue to run the meeting. The Cubs have been told that when Samuel and Akela go into the kitchen it is because Samuel is being fed.  If you have any questions or concerns about this, please speak to Akela.
Upcoming Events

Cub Capers November 13

Dear Parents/Guardians,                                 November 13, 2013

Popcorn will be available for pick-up next Wednesday, November 20th at the Scout Hall at 8:00pm.  Our meeting will also be wrapping up at this time to allow leaders to help with the distribution of popcorn.

On Saturday December 7th, we will be sponsoring a family outing to the Christkindl Market in Kitchener. For more information the Christkindl Market visit: http://www.christkindl.ca/ .  We will be traveling by bus from Elmira to Kitchener and returning the same way – it is much easier to find parking in Elmira than in Kitchener!  As usual, there will be carpooling available from Palmerston if needed.  More details on departure and return times will be available next week.

A note about winter weather:  As the weather turns more wintery, the general rule of thumb is that if school is cancelled due to weather, so is Cubs.  In cases where school has gone on as normal and the weather has turned foul later in the day, leaders will communicate a cancellation of the meeting if necessary.

A note about the baby: Contrary to rumors going around last week, Akela’s baby is not expected to arrive until mid-December! If the baby does decide to come early (Baby will come when baby decides to come!) Cub meetings will proceed as scheduled – Akela just won’t be there.  Akela and baby will be at meetings after Christmas break.

A note about badge work: Cubs are welcome to work on badges at home.  Some badge requirements require a presentation to the group or to a leader.  This can easily be arranged most weeks.  Other badges cannot be presented in this way (swimming for example) – in this case a note from a parent or guardian will suffice as evidence of completed badge work.

Upcoming Events
November 20 – regular meeting – popcorn pick-up at 8pm
November 27 – regular meeting – outdoor activities planned!
December 4 – regular meeting

December 7 – Christkindle market outing, Santa Claus parade, more details to follow!

Cub Capers - October 16

Dear Parents/Guardians,                                                                                October 16, 2013
We had an excellent overnight camp this weekend.  I don’t think the weather could have been better if we custom ordered it.   Our theme for camp was “Hunters and Gatherers” and the cubs had to hunt for and gather their lunch on Saturday.  Some of the food was growing wild and other food had been planted by the leaders to ensure that there would be food to find.  Some of the wild finds included fresh apples, soybeans gleaned from a farmer’s field, worms, and puffballs.  All wild finds were cleared/identified by a leader before the cubs got to try them, so everyone was safe!
In other exciting news, 1st Palmerston Cubs now have a blog! Check it out at www.1stpalmerstoncubs.blogspot.ca .  I will be updating the background yet to make it more exciting (plain white bores me) and will post pictures, videos, and notes about things the cubs are up to.  I also hope to post the weekly Cub Capers there.  Currently there are some pictures and a video from camp up on the blog.
Apple day is this weekend.  Apple polishing is Friday night from 7:30pm-8:30pm. Apple day begins at 9:30am on Saturday.  Both days meet at the Scout Hall (where we have our regular meetings).  Please wear your uniform both days!
Next week (October 23) we will be doing a pack popcorn campaign.  We will meet in Harriston in the L&M parking lot at 7pm, break into groups, and go door-to-door selling popcorn.  We are inviting the Palmerston Scouts to join us.  We do need parent volunteers to help out at this event.  If you are willing/able to help out, please speak to a leader.  You must have completed your Child and Youth Safety training before you are able to work with the Cubs.  If you need assistance getting your Cub to and from Harriston, please speak to a leader.
Popcorn forms are due on the 23rd.  All orders must be prepaid.

Upcoming events:
October 18,  7:30pm – polishing apples for Apple Day.  Meet at the Scout Hall.  Wear your uniform.
October 19, 9:30 am – Apple day. Meet at the Scout Hall. Wear your uniform.
